South Boston So You Want To Live Here

Choosing a neighborhood is more than just proximity to work and entertainment; it should fit your personality. South Boston has deep Irish working-class roots and a tight-knit community. When deciding between the East and West Sides, consider your lifestyle. The West Side offers easy access to restaurants and bars and proximity to the Seaport District and South End, making it a good fit for those who enjoy being close to amenities. The East Side, with its beaches, more spacious homes, and outdoor fitness options like running along Columbia Road, suits those who prefer a quieter environment. Both sides have unique appeal, so choose the one that best aligns with your lifestyle and priorities. So You want to live in South Boston.

South Boston offers many perks. It used to be one of the most affordable places for young professionals starting out looking to rent in a central and affordable area. It is close to great dining and an easy commute to downtown Boston and Back Bay. What is not to love? When moving to South Boston, you need to decide your price point.

1) Pick Your Price Point 

South Boston’s Median Condo Price is $922,022, and the Median Sales price for a single-family home is $1,061,000.00. If you’re not ready to buy, the average rent in South Boston is $3,918.00. Homes for sale or rent do not stay on the market. Most homes remain on the market for 30-60 days. Prices in South Boston have declined slightly, but for buying a two-bedroom in South Boston, the median sales price is $903,034, which is a slight decline from the median sales price the year prior, which was  

$ 910,203.00. Rents have increased for a two-bedroom from $3,852.00 to $3,922.00. One Bedroom and Three bedrooms are available for rent as well.

2) Plot your Commute

Traffic in South Boston can be challenging, especially during peak hours. Residents may live near Andrew Station or Broadway, but those farther away might need to rely on buses or drive, facing traffic. The worst congestion is often from Back Bay to Broadway Station, but it improves past Broadway. This area is a significant highway access point, which adds to the traffic. South Boston offers bus routes to downtown areas like Fort Point, Back Bay, South End, and the Seaport District. Commuting outside rush hours can make the experience more manageable, but delays are common during peak times.

 

 

 

 

3) Take in the Vibe and How it fits with you

Choosing a neighborhood is more than convenience; it should match your personality. South Boston, with its Irish working-class roots, is a tight-knit community. If you prefer easy access to restaurants and bars and proximity to the Seaport District or South End, the West Side might suit you. For more space, a beach vibe, and outdoor fitness options, consider the East Side, which is quieter but still offers dining and coffee shops with longer waits. Your choice between the East and West Sides should reflect your lifestyle and preferences, weighing the pros and cons of each area.

 

4) Check out the Culture

 Boston is so much more than what you see in the movies. Good Will Hunting featured L St Tavern and Moakley Courthouse, where the departed filmed scenes and other movies, but South Boston is more than what you see in the film. South Boston takes its traditions seriously, such as the St Patty’s Day parade, where everyone is Irish that day. New dining spots have come in, but many have profound roots. The oldest bar in South Boston dates back to 1890 and is still around Amrheins.

 

5) Scope out the Schools
